Rainbow Drive In

Alix loves drive ins so we had to stop. It was crazy busy with locals and tourists! A combo of traditional drive in food and Hawaiian dishes. We were adventurous and had the mixed plate. 4 kinds of meat, rice, macaroni salad, and gravy. It was delicious!

They got a “slush float”. Strawberry slush with vanilla ice cream. Yum!

Dole Pineapple Plantation

Pineapple Fun!

It’s definitely touristy, but a fun stop!

Pineapple is a strange and delicious fruit.

There is a garden that shows how pineapple grows. We learned a lot. Most interesting- all pineapple grows from the top of a picked pineapple plant. They root the top after they harvest the fruit and plant it again! We might have to try it at home

Mini pineapples are kind of cute!

It’s tradition

We started this because my sister collects flat pennies. Now we do too.

Victory ice cream is delicious!

Pineapple soft serve with pineapple chunks.

The World’s Largest Hedge Maze

At the Dole pineapple plantation.

We challenged the kids- last one to find all eight stops buys ice cream.

We met the kids at one spot.

To show that you have been to each stop you put your card in and trace the shape.

We took selfies at each stop to prove that we were there!

Parents won by 2 min. Kids finished in 34 min, parents  in 32.

What a fun way to win ice cream!

Turtle Bay

A beautiful volcanic stretch on the north shore. It’s easy to see how the lava flowed here. There are several peaceful coves with calm water. Apparently in the winter the waves here are huge!

Aloha Seafood

Alix has become our restaurant navigator. She loves using the map app to find places, read the reviews, and decide if we should stop. This one didn’t look like much but got 5-star ratings with a ton of reviews. We had two different types of shrimp and they were both amazing!

The chickens are everywhere! This one was eagerly awaiting our crumbs.

Kualoa Ranch

There is a huge ranch with mountains, valleys, and beach where they filmed Jurassic Park and the TV show Lost. It’s easy to see why!

Mokoli’i Island

Also known as Chinamen’s Hat. We were glad for a spot of sun as we drove through a huge rain storm on the way.

Jim climbed the tree, then everyone had to try.

The view from above.

Interstate H3

We are wondering why the is an interstate in Hawaii.

Makapu’u Lookout

The road winds along the cliffs and offers incredible views. It’s a bit like the highway along the California coast at this point.

Halona Blowhole Overlook

It’s pretty dramatic from close up. Kind of like old faithful but more predictable.

Halona Blowhole

There is a rock in the distance that blows water straight up when the wave hits it right.

The Windward side of O’ahu

We rented a car to drive around the island. This was our first stop overlooking the rocky shore.
